Today starts the 9 days
July 16th, 2007Today starts the 9 days of mourning for the Jewish people. During this time, we refrain from eating meats in order to remind ourselves of the suffering the Jewish nation has endured. We also don’t bathe in the normal fashion and are stringent in many other mourning practices. It is important that a person makes a separation between being brokenhearted and being depressed. Reaching a state of sadness so strong that you are depressed is not what this time period is all about. Rather, it is a time for change and realizing what is truly important in ones life. To ask oneself, what does it truly mean to be a Jew.
